Hobbies 101 – Four Books on Wine Tasting, Rock Painting, Jewelry Making, and Gardening

Ready to start a new hobby? Consider one of these four books to help get you going.

Wine – A Beginner’s Guide by Ken Fredrickson

41CeMnl5INL._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_Love wine? Want to look like a pro next time you attend a wine-tasting? This book will get you on the right path. It’s an easy to read text that will have you pairing wines like a professional while you enjoy new favorites and old standards.

Wine Beginner’s Guide tells you how to read labels, covers types of wines and costs of wines, the differences in wine glasses, and so much more. My favorite section of the book is the part on pairings. I only knew the basic – white wine with white sauce/meat, red wine with red sauce/meat – but there’s so much more to it!

This is a must-have book for budding wine lovers and would make an excellent Valentine’s Day gift for your wine-loving, book-loving partner or crush!

Rock Painting for Beginners by Adrianne Surian

Once upon a time, I painted rocks and shells. I thought about getting back into it (and still 51un2PvfnvL._SY498_BO1,204,203,200_might), and the publisher I get all of these great free books from had a book on painting rocks. I snagged it up for some inspiration. Of course, I wanted inspiration for painting stones I could sell for The Art Of Dreams And Divination. This book has some cute ideas, but nothing worthy of a witchy mega-store.

I think Rock Painting for Beginners could be enjoyed by children and adults alike. There are projects perfect for all ages of artists. Not only does it include inspiration and step-by-step instructions for some rock painting projects, but it also covers different types of paints you may use and even has a color wheel.

You’ll learn a few different painting styles, most of which will easily transfer from rock painting to painting on canvases, in case you run out of rocks!

Bead Jewelry Making for Beginners by Cecilia Leibovitz

51sp2jcFFAL._SX258_BO1,204,203,200_Ever thought about making jewelry for fun or money? Here’s a book to get you started.

Bead Jewelry Making for Beginners is the only book you need to get a jumpstart on jewelry making. I absolutely love everything about this book, and I don’t even make beaded jewelry (and I have no desire to). My jewelry making preference are pendants, and this book has some of that in it too!

From tips on how to get started and the tools you’ll need, to step-by-step project to make some gorgeous jewelry pieces, this book is sure to please even the pro-jewelry maker.

Raised-Bed Gardening for Beginners by Tammy Wylie

Want to start gardening in your yard? Whether or not you have the right soil for it, raised-bed gardening allows you a way to garden with control, and it doesn’t hold you back from growing the fruits and vegetables you want. It also adds some aesthetic to your yard.

Raised-Bed Gardening for Beginners helps you pick the right area in your yard for gardening (plants need sunshine to flourish), learn which plants can grow in the same space and which should be kept separated, and get a lesson in building raised-bed. There is so much info in this book that the first time through may be a little overwhelming.

My favorite part of the book is the listing of foods you may be thinking about growing in your yard. Each listing included information on how much sun they need, how to properly plant them, and even how to harvest.
